The art of Bill Ross, long time Jersey Shore resident, will be featured in the
gallery windows of the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, during May. Ross works largely in the most pared down of colors, black and white, but don’t believe it is simplistic. He includes all manner of grey in between those extremes, created with the marks of charcoal or ink, on clay board or paper. Although sometimes, he will work in colored pencil.
Of the pieces Ross will exhibit, he says there will be a range of subjects, but, “one constant is a highly detailed representation of the surreal.” Indeed, for one of the works he will show is his take on the creature of folklore, the Jersey Devil. This piece has recently appeared in the Special Issue of the magazine, “Weird NJ”. Ross considers himself self-taught and has worked seriously at his art since 2007.
Beginning a few years later, he began being accepted into juried shows. This fall he will appear in a two person show at Artworks in Trenton, Two Different Dimensions – Bill Ross / Mark Dormer. He has had two solo shows, at Speakeasy Arts in Boonton, and as a featured artist in Monmouth Museum’s, NJ Emerging Artists Series.
To date Ross has won numerous awards for his art. In 2013 and 2015 he won the Graphics Gold Medal of Honor, at the Salmagundi Club, NYC, Audubon Artists exhibition. Among his other awards are those for Technical Excellence, Graphics First Place, and for several exhibitions, Best In Show or Honorable Mention. He exhibits at many art locations in Monmouth County and NJ, and also in Philadelphia.
In the main gallery space at Art Alliance, Ross will jury members’ pieces under the theme, Figures & Faces. Also showing will be students from Inspired Minds Art School, showing their pieces, in High School Seniors Artwork.
